Bosphorus Cruise in Istanbul: Which One Should You Choose?

Published: · Bosphorus Glow

In short

A Bosphorus cruise is a boat trip along the strait that divides Istanbul between Europe and Asia. Choose by the time of day: a daytime cruise shows you the shoreline clearly, a sunset cruise gives you the best light, a night cruise adds dinner and shows, and a private yacht is for your own group and schedule.

What a Bosphorus cruise is

The Bosphorus is the strait that runs through the middle of Istanbul. It is about 31 kilometres long and connects the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara. One shore is in Europe, the other in Asia, and much of what the city is known for stands along the water: palaces, mosques, fortresses, wooden waterfront mansions and three suspension bridges.

A cruise is the simplest way to see both shores at once. Most sightseeing cruises in Istanbul last between one and two hours; dinner cruises usually take about three.

The four kinds of cruise

Bosphorus Glow offers four ways to go out on the water. These are the confirmed details of each.

  • Daytime Bosphorus tour: 2 hours, at 11:00–13:00 or 14:00–16:00, from Eminönü. Hotel transfer, tea and guided commentary on board in English and Russian are included. €20 per person.
  • One-hour boat tour: 17:00–18:00 from Eminönü, with tea and the same commentary, without hotel transfer. €10 per person.
  • Sunset cruise: every evening from 17:00 to 19:00. €40 per person.
  • Night cruise: 20:30–23:30 from Kabataş, with hotel pickup and drop-off, dinner, unlimited soft drinks and three hours of dance shows.
  • Private yacht rental: you choose the date and a time range of at least 2 hours, and we send you the yachts available for that slot with their departure point and price.

How to choose

If it is your first visit and you want to understand the shape of the city, take a daytime tour: in daylight you can tell the palaces, fortresses and neighbourhoods apart, and the commentary tells you what you are looking at.

If photographs matter most, choose the sunset cruise for the warm, low light. If you want a full evening out with a meal and entertainment, the night cruise is the one. If you are celebrating something, or simply want the boat to yourselves, ask about a private yacht.

Short on time? The one-hour tour at 17:00 fits between an afternoon in the old city and dinner.

When to go and what to bring

Spring and autumn have the mildest weather in Istanbul. Whatever the month, it is cooler and windier on the water than in the streets, so bring an extra layer, even in summer evenings.

A charged phone or camera is worth having. Tell us in advance if anyone in your group has a mobility need, so we can advise you before you book.
